Personality:
After everything that Kid has been through, one would think that he would be bitter. He gave up a good chunk of his childhood to take care of his mother, who he lost despite all of his hard work. He opted to begin going by "Kid," rather than his own name, because everything associated with his birth name was gone when his mother died.
And maybe he's a little quiet, a little tired from all the things he's already had to do, but he's not at all bitter. He's learned from everything he's gone through, rather than let it weigh him down. Throughout everything, he remains surprisingly calm and level-headed, patient regardless of the situation. Very little will actually drag him down, as calm as he tends to be. Admittedly, he does have something of a grim sense of humor, but it's subtle. Hell, his sense of humor itself is just as quiet and even as him. He'll slip it into normal conversation, even with simple teasing, and it may be hard for others to pick up.
But when something does manage to disturb him, he's incredibly bull-headed and stubborn, and will not stop until the problem is solved. He is a determinator, someone that is nigh unstoppable. This is especially applicable when it comes to those he knows and cares about-- if something is wrong with them, he will do everything in his power to help them and put a stop to their troubles. Even if he has troubles of his own, he'll put theirs before his. He will, essentially, do whatever it takes to make sure he doesn't lose anyone else ever again.
Honestly, he'd even be willing to help a stranger without much questioning. He's not exactly gullible, he'll ask some questions to try and make sure he's doing the right thing, but other than that he just wants to help. Even if he doesn't get anything out of it beyond simple thanks. He's not out for a reward, he just wants other people to be happy.
At the same time, he keeps his anger contained. One almost has to wonder if it's actually possible for him to get angry-- it is, but it takes a lot to reveal it. His temper is under control, and difficult to disturb, but it can very well become explosive if he's pressured to that point. And, truly, it is not wise to back him into a corner like that.

AU History:
Born smack in the middle of Texas, "Kid" was born under a different name to a normal-- if frail-- mother. His father had left them during his mother's pregnancy, leaving a weak woman to birth and raise a boy who already presented anomalies by owning his mother's pale, white hair (brought on by illness, in her case) from day one. They lived in relative poverty for a time, his mother unable to hold a steady job due to illness, and Kid doing what he could from a young age to help her while dealing with prejudice brought on by judgmental children.
School was hard for Kid, ADHD and dyslexia hitting him hard on top of his strange, white hair and quiet intensity. It lead to a lot of scuffles with other kids, and he frequently found himself coming home covered in bruises. The guilt of his mother's concern hurt him more than anything else, but at the age of twelve he decided he would do something for her: he stopped going to school. It was just taking what little money could have been put towards medication and doctors into a place that didn't do him any favors.
So he started to work more often, helping with construction and deliveries where he could. For a time, it all paid off. He might not have had the education his mother wanted him to have, but he learned a lot on the streets that he wouldn't have in a classroom, and his mother was getting the attention she needed. On these jobs, he earned the simple nickname "Kid," which he decided to go by rather than giving them his actual name.
But when he turned fifteen, he went on a delivery that took him out of the city for nearly a week. When he returned, he came home to an empty house-- his mother had collapsed, her health deteriorating despite the treatment she'd been undergoing, and she'd been whisked away to the hospital. By the time he found out where she'd been taken, it was too late. She'd passed on.
Which left him alone. In his grief, he threw himself into more work. He had nothing left at home, so he might as well carry on with the only other thing he knew.
